Voice Bubbles for iPad was developed to be an at-home experience of the voice-expanding mirror principle used in Uluzuzulalia and The Voice Trunk, adapting our intentions to the flat but tactile screen of the iPad. When you touch the screen, a bubble grows, and ‘holds’ a recording of what your voice does. The colours respond to tiny gradations of pitch; the edgings to amplitude; the size to duration. Consonants that interrupt the sound etch circular lines. The textured, crayon-like coloured fillings help us evoke haptic depth. The sounds play back randomly in one mode, but in another they can be organised into little compositions. Voice Bubbles was distributed for free from 2014 to 2016, until the launch of iOS9, and the coding was then given to OKIDO as our funding ended at that point, and our goal was to keep the app free. Voice Bubbles was the third product of the Vivacious Voices in Action research-creation project, and was rated 4.5 stars on iTunes for its duration. Below, see stills from the Voice Bubbles Screen.
